There are a number of arguments that people make and they all tend to be similar in nature, in that they attack the legitimacy of gay marriage. Some of these arguments are good and others are bad or at least poorly thought out. Let's look at some of these arguments one by one.Argument One: Gay Marriage Has No Historical Significance. Let's face it; there's more to this debate than just gay marriage. There is the issue of religious liberty as well. There is also the issue of government controlling a union between two people. In other words, the idea of gay marriage and gay relationships is about freedom. And yet, there is no logical connection between these ideas in a logical, logical manner.Argument Two: Gay Marriage Could Lead to the Extinction of Marriage. Okay, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but it still would seem somewhat far-fetched to suggest that marriage is an institu tion with historical significance that could be at risk. Arguments of this type usually show a lack of understanding of what marriage really is. Marriage is not some institution that was invented to be 'sacrificed' for any reason, at any time.Argument Three: Gay Marriage Could Ruin the Whole Racket. You'd be hard pressed to find a logical argument for gay marriage that does not immediately collapse in an inferno of logic and reason. The argument usually falls apart very quickly, and if it stands at all it leaves open questions as to whether the argument is still valid or not.Argument Four: Marriage Equality Will Destroy Social Foundations. While this may have some truth to it, the argument does not fall neatly into place. If gay marriage is truly going to destroy social relations between people, then it is the right thing to do. Society cannot exist without social relations, nor can relationships, or at least healthy ones, be allowed to stand on shaky ground such as the basis of out dated, illogical, and rickety arguments.Argument Five: Gay Marriage Will Make It Impossible to Raise Children. This is a very real, but wildly exaggerated fear. The basic assumption here is that gay parents are incapable of raising children because they will undermine traditional notions of family.Argument Six: Gay Marriage Will Make Children Too 'Queer' For Their Parents' Sensibilities. This is probably the most dangerous of all the arguments. For whatever reason, there is a number of people who believe that there should be a difference between gay couples and heterosexual couples in the way they raise their children. By that logic, people should be allowed to raise children in whatever way they choose to.The final argument is about issues of morality. In their minds, they feel that we ought to draw lines in the sand and say that children raised by same sex couples are inferior to children raised by opposite-sex couples. This argument is simply ridiculous and has no logical basis.
